When it comes to wine, I consider myself an expert as I am a big wine lover, so I often buy wine for both myself and for my friends as a gift. There is a variety of wine stores in Melbourne you can visit and enjoy the experience they provide.

I am very selective about wine stores, and I like to take into consideration certain factors before I visit them. The wine stores I go to have to be independent and wine retail must be their primary business, they also have to offer a unique selection of wines. The service needs to be friendly, focusing on customer education, so the stuff has to be engaging and well informed. It is also important that the store introduces new Australian wine producers to the market.

So, I have come up with a list of five best wine stores in Melbourne after taking into account previously mentioned factors.

Wine Republic

This wine store is the winner of the 2015 ’Best New Company’ award at the Australian Small Business Awards. Taking a stroll through this store will make you feel like you are in a gallery and you will not be rushed to pick a bottle. There are 1500 wines I could choose from, as well as various beers, ciders, rum, gin, etc. The staff was very knowledgeable and happy to help me make the best decision possible. The people responsiible for Wine Republic’s design are local artists, designers and illustrators. This wine store works every day and you can find it at 265 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy Victoria.

City Wine Shop

This is one of the best places when it comes to shelter, warmth, good chat and quality wine. In this store I was provided with a choice of 400 wines from Australia and Europe. The main focus and exprertise of this store is champagne. The location of the store offered me a great view, as i picked a bottle, grabbed a seat at the bar and observed Spring Street’s Treasury Building, while numerous theatergoers, gellato enthusiasts and businessmen/women walked by. The store is open every day and you can locate it at 159 Spring Street.

This bottle shop in Melbourne is independently owned and provides shoppers with a unique shopping experience. Their team of liquor experts are willing to help every customer select the right product. They have 300 stores nationwide and are continually growing, which is definitely a sign of quality. Bottle-O offers an amazing selection of wines, and they also offer beers, cider and spirits. One of this store’s locations is at 440 Elizabeth Street and it is open every day of
the week.

Harry and Franky

The focus of this store are small, family-owned wine producers from Australia and also overseas. They offer 600 different bottles of wine, cider and beers to choose from. I was even offered a variety of grappa, whisky, cognac, Armagnac, and even The Link Text Negroni and Aperol Spritz. At one point, I got hungry and was offered splendid snacks such as house-made charcuterie, farmhouse cheeses, freshly-shucked oysters and ’Grand Cru’ toasties. You can find this store at 317 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. It is open every day.

Blackhearts and Sparrows

This store was opened back in 2005, and they now have six different locations, which is definitely a sign of how good they are. Every single bottle of wine, cider and beer is tested, assessed and approved to ensure flawless quality. The staff is very proficient and also willing to share their knowledge both in store and online, as they regularly update their website. I found this store at 516 Macaulay Road, Kensington Victoria.
